If you’re applying for a Mathematics course in the UK, you could be required to sit the Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP). A much harder, longer, and more abstract test than what you’d be used to in school-level maths, the STEP is seen as a challenging test.

Which UK Universities require the STEP?
The University of Cambridge requires the STEP as part of your application, although other universities may ask applicants to take it as part of their acceptance offer. These include:

The STEP is different from other admissions tests. It’s taken much later in the year, after the UCAS application in October (for Cambridge) or January (for other UK universities). You will be informed by your chosen universities whether you need to take the STEP as additional proof once they extend you an offer.

What is the STEP like?
Each STEP exam is three hours long, and the questions are much longer and more difficult than what you might be used to. At school, students answer about a dozen questions in two hours, while in the STEP, you answer only six questions in three hours.
There are two STEP examinations: STEP 2 and STEP 3. There used to be a STEP 1, but it was removed a few years ago. Students take either one or two exams, depending on university requirements.

is based on A-Level Mathematics and AS-Level Further Mathematics.
STEP 3
is based on A-Level Mathematics and A-Level Further Mathematics.

Graded from S (Outstanding) to U (Ungraded) . Papers are marked out of 180 and converted into grades .
What is a good STEP score?
A Grade 1 or higher is ideal. Nearly everyone who scores Grade 1 secures a confirmed offer .
Do I need to take all the STEP papers?
No. Most students take STEP 2 and/or STEP 3 , depending on university requirements .
Can I retake the STEP?
No, you can only sit the STEP once per year .
Do I have to pay for the STEP?
Yes, the fee is around £93 (varies by test center and location).
How should I prepare for the STEP?
