The Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) is one of the most difficult UK entrance exams. Designed to assess the genuine mathematical understanding of a student, rather than their speed or rote memorisation, it was for years a key factor in the admissions process of both the University of Oxford and Imperial College London.

What does the MAT test?
The MAT is a 2.5-hour paper-based test, divided into two sections.

Final Review and Mock Exams

Do I need to take the MAT?
Not anymore. From 2027 entry Oxford has replaced the MAT with the TMUA (Imperial made the same switch earlier), so Mathematics and Computer Science applicants now sit the TMUA instead. The mathematical skills tested are very similar, and our tutors prepare you for the new test.

Does the MAT have negative marking?
No, there is no penalty for incorrect answers.
