What does the LNAT test?
The LNAT doesn’t necessarily test legal knowledge, but it does assess your critical thinking, logical reasoning, and essay-writing skills. A good LNAT score is crucial to obtaining that dream offer, especially at the UK’s most competitive universities.
The test is divided into two parts:
Section A:
A 95-minute multiple-choice segment where you’ll analyze passages and answer 42 questions testing comprehension and critical reasoning.
Section B:
A 40-minute essay section where you’ll choose one of three prompts to demonstrate your ability to construct a coherent, persuasive argument.

Registration for and booking of LNAT tests for entry into university in September 2027 opens.

Testing starts.

Final deadline to take the LNAT if applying to Oxford or Cambridge. This is also the UCAS application deadline for these universities (you can find out more about UCAS, which is the UK’s platform for university applications, on our blog).
January 2027
For other universities that accept the LNAT (e.g., King’s College London, UCL, and others), tests must be completed by their specific deadlines, often in mid to late January.
Mid-February 2027
LNAT results are released to applicants and universities.

Questions about LNAT Exam Tutoring
Which universities require the LNAT?
Here’s a list of every single university that requires the LNAT : UK Universities: University of Bristol University of Cambridge Durham University University of Glasgow King's College London London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) University of Oxford SOAS, University of London University College London (UCL) Non-UK Universities: Singapore University of Social Sciences IE University (Spain) If you’re applying to any of the above, you’ll need to register for your test and prepare with plenty of time.
How is the LNAT scored?
The LNAT is unusual in that it scores the two sections differently. Section A is multiple choice, so you’re scored numerically out of 42. The essay in Section B, on the other hand, is not scored numerically at all, and is sent to the universities for them to assess individually.
What is a good LNAT score?
A ‘good’ score depends on the university and year. Competitive universities like Oxford or Cambridge usually look for very high scores around 27-30 , which is above the national average. Any score around 22-27 is usually considered a ‘good’ score. But don’t worry, universities don’t have strict rules on this and will consider other aspects of your application, such as your personal statement.
Can I retake the LNAT?
You can’t take two LNAT tests in the same application year. If you’re not happy with your results (or your offers), you’ll have to reapply in the following year.
How should I prepare for the LNAT?
Preparation involves practicing comprehension questions and argumentative essays. Your Think Smart tutor is well versed in LNAT preparation, and will make sure you don’t miss anything important!
Do LNAT results roll over?
No, LNAT scores are valid only for the year in which you apply. If reapplying, you must retake the test in the following year.
How are the results shared?
LNAT results are sent directly to the universities after the test is taken. You’ll receive your personal score later, usually around spring.
How hard is the LNAT?
The LNAT can be a nerve wracking test to take, especially if you’re not used to studying law at school. But with the right preparation, there’s no reason you shouldn’t feel super confident on the day.
Can I take the LNAT in my country?
Yes, the LNAT is available in many countries worldwide at designated Pearson VUE test centers. You can find a full list of test locations on the official LNAT website .
What happens if there are no LNAT test centers in my country?
If no test center is available nearby, you may need to travel to a neighboring country. Contact LNAT support to discuss your options.
Is the LNAT available in other languages besides English?
No, the LNAT is only offered in English. If English isn’t your first language, make sure to prepare thoroughly by practising writing in academic English under timed conditions.
